Reviving the Feast of Fools TraditionIt’s a day for breaking rules! Come and join the Feast of Fools! April Fool’s Day celebrates a centuries old tradition of mischievous antics and revelry. This year on April 1st, Wise Fool New Mexico’s award-winning visuals and celebrated performers will create dinner theater - complete with a full dining experience and one-of-a-kind circus entertainment. Wise Fool will debut its wildly popular Feast of Fools in Santa Fe at the Railyard Restaurant Tuesday, April 1st for an evening of food, fun and foolishness.
The Feast of Fools’ goal to is to raise money and build community so that Wise Fool may continue its mission - to use performance as a tool to spread social justice and empowerment to all people throughout New Mexico and the world. Last year alone the nonprofit theater company performed for over 3,000 youth in New Mexico and inspired almost 500 more in workshops. In addition, more than 800 people of all ages participated in Wise Fool events and more than 16,000 people attended performances. The Feast of Fools tradition draws from ancient pagan customs. It dates at least back to pre-Christian Rome and a harvest festival honoring the god Saturn (Saturnalia). It has always been a brief and raucous social revolution, a time when all normal codes of behavior were suspended. All class distinctions and social rules were turned upside down during the feast. Slaves and masters switched roles, cross-dressing, drinking to excess, bawdy songs and gambling were all allowed.
WFNM began its work in New Mexico in 2000 and since then has created 16 original performances, worked in 32 schools and performed at 28 libraries across New Mexico. Wise Fool has also received The Reporter’s Best of Santa Fe Award for the last two years and accepted the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Please join Wise Fool in breaking the rules, celebrating a social revolution and creating a new tradition for April Fool’s Day! Get a sponsorship VIP table for $1500 (seats 6), general tickets for $100 or seats in the bar area for $65. Dinner and entertainment included.
