Deirdre Morris
Deirdre Morris joined WFNM in 2001 after two years of
working with the company as an independent performer. Deirdre has been involved
in the performance arts for the past 18 years and as a solo Butoh artist for
the past ten years. She has held the positions of choreographer, performer,
principle dancer, business manager, director and administrator for many
projects located mainly in and around the New
England area, New
Mexico and Miami, Florida. One
example of her projects is Fusionworks: Women Dancing, an all female modern
group that showcased the strength and versatility of an all woman troupe in performances touring
throughout the east coast. In this project, Deirdre also worked with inner city
youth throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts both
as an arts educator and as a positive female role model. Deirdre worked in the capacity of arts educator and
choreographer with, AS220 in Providence, RI, (a non-profit arts space that
promotes inner city youth programs and education by providing a free space for
performance and art exhibition) the local Aids Awareness Chapter (fundraising
coordinator and performer) and The Carriage House Theater in Providence, RI (
working with at risk youth in an impoverished neighborhood and providing
programming most notably to the students at Hope High School, one of the high
schools in Providence with the highest drop out and violence rates in the
city). Locally she was chosen to act as artistic director of the all female One
Railroad Circus 2000, by WFNM and curator of the Annual Choreographers Showcase
2000 and 2001, by the New Mexico Dance Coalition.
Currently Deirdre is working
in her seventh year with Wise Fool New Mexico as a principal performer, teacher,
choreographer, Production and Booking Agent, Studio Manager and she is in her
fourth year as the Producer of the Women’s Summer Circus Workshop Intensive.
Deirdre has also been a member of the Production team for a program in Miami, Florida
titled “Walking Tall Circus”, where she has been working with at risk youth in
the Miami
county area. Deirdre is currently working on a new performance project to be
premiered in September 2006, tentively titled Ashes & Snow: a study in the
Alchemy of Hope.
